Statement on the Water Park

"We are gratified that this ill conceived project has been stopped. However it should never have been allowed to go forward in the first place. Turning over vast amounts of public parkland to economic development projects in exchange for maintenance dollars for the park is not the solution. Our elected officials must begin to take the funding for park maintenance seriously. We would like to thank all the people who have worked tirelessly for the protection of this public parkland."

Moses Under the Bridge
New York Times, October 22, 2006

Q. Whenever I’m on the Triborough Bridge, I remember that I once heard that Robert Moses’ office was under the bridge. Is it still there? And is it true that it showed up as the M.I.B. headquarters in the movie “Men in Black”?

A. The building is there, on Randall's Island, and it is known as the Robert Moses Building, but Moses’ office — the center of a public works empire — was remodeled out of existence years ago. The building is the headquarters of M.T.A. Bridges and Tunnels, the successor to the old Triborough Bridge Authority. “The space where his office was has been reconfigured and there are different offices there today,” said Catherine Sweeney, a spokeswoman for the agency. “We’re not sure what the dimensions were, but it’s a good bet it wasn’t small.” As for the cinematic “Men in Black,” they used a different M.T.A. building, the tower that houses the ventilator shaft for the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. It makes a cameo appearance as the M.I.B. headquarters.
