Second Avenue Subway to Get Green Light

NY 1 News, April 17, 2006

Slow progress is being made on the Second Avenue subway project.

The Federal Transit Administration says plans for a new subway line should enter their final design stage on Tuesday. That means there are only a few more hurdles to overcome before the project's federal funding is approved.

The city is expecting to receive over $1 billion from the federal government to help fund the project. The grants would be used to build the first phase of the project, which will run between 96th and 63rd streets.

In the end, the line is slated to run from 125th Street in East Harlem to Hanover Square in the Financial District.

The MTA hopes the first segment of the line will be done by 2012, and the entire Second Avenue line will be completed by 2030.

Plans for the East Side line go back decades.
