The tallest flagpole I could find in New York City — maybe in the entire Northeast — was also installed by Moses. It’s over Randalls Island, near the toll plaza on the Triborough Bridge, which Moses dedicated in 1936, and which has just been renamed in memory of Robert F. Kennedy.

It’s not as tall as it was when it was installed — about 10 feet was lopped off in the 1990s after it accidentally bent. Still, it soars 187 feet. It’s so tall that to warn away planes flying in and out of La Guardia, it’s topped by red lights — not by an eagle — and probably only rarely by a pigeon. |
